Lock stitched Waist Overalls

　The number of new customers has increased, so let me recap: BBM does not make replica jeans, but lockstitch Waist Overalls. Chain stitch is an authentic style that uses only the hem and buttonholes. (As you know, West Overalls was what Levi's called jeans until the 1950s, and the 501 was a flat felled seamed until the early 1900s when Union Special's two-needle chain stitch was adopted. It was a lockstitch structure.) Based on the lockstitch Waist Overalls, the silhouette and details are customized. There are no other Waist Overalls (jeans) with flat felled seamed because it’s inefficient work nowadays.


　BBM puts a great deal of emphasis on the sewing machines and tools used. The sewing machines used are mainly Singer's industrial antiques. (I don't use household sewing machines) Beyond its performance, it is a sewing machine manufacturer that started in New York, and the streamlined shape and decoration of the sewing machine are beautiful. (Chicago's Union Special is so lame) Furthermore, Singer was prosperous around the 1900s, such as building the tallest building in the world in Manhattan and the model of the Statue of Liberty was Mrs. Singer's president. The Singer was a symbol of NY. I try to find and use other tools that are as old as possible and have a nice design. Such sewing machines and tools are very important in making works.



　Waist Overalls was finally sewn with the recent 1881 Singer No.2 in here. Due to the too primitive structure, I had a hard time, such as not being able to get the upper and lower thread tensions well. The first one took 6 days to finish. But voila! It’s badass. So, I will soon add a new model using that Singer No.2. Details will be provided at a later date. Don't be surprised.

　Singer # 2 was released in 1854, shortly after the sewing machine was invented, and # 31 was released around 1890 and was just invented and put into practical use. Since it is a high-speed model compatible with steam and electric power, there is a difference in performance. It's like The Tortoise and The Hare.


　新しいお客様が増えてきたので、おさらいです。BBMはレプリカジーンズを作っているわけではなく、本縫いの Waist Overallsを作っています。チェーンステッチは裾とボタンホール以外使わないオーセンティックスタイルです。（ご存知の通りウエストオーヴァーオールスとはLevi’sがジーンズのことを1950年代ぐらいまでそう呼んでいました。そして1900年代前半にUnion Specialの2本針チェーンステッチが採用される前まで501は折り伏せ縫いという本縫い構造でしたね）その本縫いのWaist Overallsをベースにして、シルエットや細部をカスタマイズしているのです。今どき作業効率の悪い折り伏せ縫いのWaist Overalls（ジーンズ）なんて他にはありません。
　BBMは使うミシン、道具にかなりの重きを置いています。使うミシンはSinger社の工業用のアンティークがメイン。（家庭用は使いません）性能以上に、それはNew Yorkで始まったミシンメーカーで、ミシンの流線型や装飾が美しいから。（シカゴのUnion Specialなんて無骨すぎてダサっ）更にマンハッタンに世界一高いビルを建てたり、自由の女神のモデルはSingerの社長夫人だったなど、Singerは1900年代前後隆盛を極め、まさにNew Yorkの象徴だったのです。他に使う道具もできる限り古くてデザインが素敵なものを探し使っています。そんなミシンや道具が作品を作る上でとても重要になるのです。

　最近例の1881年製Singer No.2でWaist Overallsがやっと縫えました。あまりにも原始的な構造のおかげで上下の糸調子が上手に取れないなど、かなり苦戦しました。最初の１本はなんと６日もかかりました。でもねヤバイんですよ、出来上がりが。ということでそのSinger No.2を使った新しいモデルを近日追加します。詳細は後日。びっくりしないように。

　Singer #2はミシンが発明されたちょっと後の1854年に発売され、#31は1890年頃発売で発明・実用化されたばかりの蒸気、電気動力に対応した高速モデルなので、性能には雲泥の差があります。うさぎとかめみたいなものです。
